AI for Ableton Live: MCP servers, Max for Live devices and apps

There are four ways to get an AI working in an Ableton Live set today: an MCP server that connects a chat client such as Claude to Live, a Max for Live device that runs inside your set, a desktop app with its own connection to Live, and tools built on Ableton's Extensions SDK. They differ in what you install, which Live version and edition you need, what you pay, and what the AI can reach in your session. This page walks through each route with a tool that represents it, lists the other names that come up in the same searches, and puts all of them side by side in two tables.

Route 1: an MCP server and a chat client

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard way to give a chat client such as Claude Desktop a set of tools. An MCP server for Ableton pairs a Remote Script inside Live with a small server that your chat client talks to.

The example here is AbletonMCP by ahujasid. On 28 September 2026 its GitHub page showed:

• Open source under the MIT licence, with 3.1k stars.
• Ableton Live 10 or newer, and Python 3.8 or newer.
• Setup in three steps: install the uv package manager, add the server to your MCP client's config, and install the Remote Script in Live. The README gives config for Claude Desktop, Cursor and Claude Code.
• Its features list covers session and track information, creating MIDI and audio tracks, clips and notes, loading instruments and effects from Live's browser, building arrangements, and playback.

On 28 September 2026, its README didn't list mixer controls (volume, pan or sends), scenes, undo or routing. The AI is whichever model your chat client runs, on that client's plan.

Route 2: a Max for Live device

A Max for Live device sits on a track in your set, like any other device, and connects the AI from there.

Producer Pal by Adam Murray is the example here. On 28 September 2026 its site, installation guide and features page said:

• Free, with "no subscriptions, no paywalls, no premium tiers", and open source under GPL-3.0.
• Packaged as a Max for Live device that runs an MCP server.
• Works with Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, Mistral, and local models through Ollama or LM Studio, which can run fully offline. It also offers an open REST API for scripting Live with no AI at all.
• Requires Ableton Live 12.3 or later with Max for Live, and recommends 12.4 or later.
• Its features page lists gain, pan, sends and routing, scenes, MIDI notes and Live's own instruments and effects. Its limitations page says third-party VST and AU plug-in parameters need mapping with Live's Configure mode first.

A Max for Live device needs an edition of Live that includes Max for Live. Ableton's edition comparison marks Max for Live as included in Suite, with Intro and Standard marked without it.

Route 3: a desktop app with its own bridge to Live

A desktop app installs next to Live and brings its own connection into the set.

StudioPilot offers two ways in, according to its homepage on 28 September 2026: a setup kit you open with Claude or Codex, which guides the connection and prepares the config, and a standalone app with the AI built in. It lists a founder price of EUR 29.99, paid once, and says it works on macOS and Windows. The homepage doesn't state a Live version or edition.

Maestra Agent, which we make, is also in this group:

• A desktop app plus a Remote Script. The app adds its Remote Script to Live from its own settings; you restart Live once and pick Maestra as a Control Surface.
• Ableton Live 11.3 or later, in any edition: Intro, Standard or Suite.
• Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11, 64-bit, and macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon Macs.
• The model is included. Requests go to our EU model provider, which keeps nothing after the reply and trains on none of it.
• Free early access until 31 October 2026, with no card.

You type what you want in a chat. It reads the session, works in bars, tracks and devices, makes the change and reads it back to confirm it landed.

Route 4: Ableton's Extensions SDK

Extensions are Ableton's own way to add tools to Live. On 28 September 2026 Ableton's Extensions page said they need Live 12 Suite, version 12.4.5 or later, and are not available in Live Standard, Intro or Lite. For now they run through Ableton's pre-release program. Akihiko Matsumoto's study notes, dated 27 July 2026, describe the same requirement.

Two AI tools built on the SDK are on GitHub:

• Live Agent by nonogv, MIT licensed. Its README states that Extensions require Live Suite, asks for a 12.4.5 pre-release build or later, and needs your own API key from Google AI Studio, OpenAI or Anthropic.
• Live Smith by SamKuler. Its README says it needs an Ableton Live build that has Extensions. It works with your own API key or, as an experimental option, a sign-in to ChatGPT, Claude or Google Antigravity, and lists optional connections to music and sound generation services such as ElevenLabs, Suno and Google Lyria.

• VIXSOUND describes itself as a signed app for macOS and Windows that adds an AI chat panel inside Ableton, with the AI included. Its homepage lists Ableton Live 11 or later. Its pricing page lists Starter at $9, Studio at $29 and Ultra at $79 a month, each with a 7-day trial that takes a payment method, and 200 free credits without a card.
• LIA is a web app that connects to your running Live set through a local bridge app, for Live 12 or later on macOS and Windows. Its pricing page lists a free plan and paid plans from Starter at EUR 24.99 a month; control of Ableton Live starts on Starter. On 28 September 2026 the paid plans showed a waitlist, with checkout opening soon.
• Jamu calls itself an AI co-producer for Ableton Live: a desktop app for macOS and Windows, with a Max for Live device for its sample and audio features. Its homepage lists a free plan, Starter at $9 a month and Producer at $30 a month, and its Jamu for Live page also lists Creator at $16 a month. The same subscription includes Jamu Jams, a browser workspace that generates songs and samples. MusicTech covered its launch on 10 March 2026.

Which one when

• You enjoy config and already use a chat client: try an MCP server.
• You want the tool as a device in your set, and your edition includes Max for Live: try a Max for Live device.
• You'd rather run an installer than edit config: try a desktop app.
• You're on Live 12 Suite and happy to run Ableton's pre-release build: look at the Extensions tools.

Where Maestra Agent fits
